The concept for the UNIV + Matuse Frogman wetsuit was to blend the aesthetic soul of early 80’s wetsuits and with the high-tech fit and functionality of today’s premium performance wetsuits. Both UNIV and Matuse are located in laid-back coastal San Diego and have long been supporters of each other’s brands. Matuse wetsuits are made from Yamamoto rubber, which is derived from 99.7% pure limestone. It is warmer (98% water impermeable) and lasts longer (titanium coated) than standard neoprene. It is also kinder to mother nature since it’s made from limestone and does not come from petroleum. Yamamoto’s Geoprene technology means thinner rubber is warmer rubber. Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist and kinetic sculptor. He builds large works, which resemble skeletons of animals and are able to walk using the wind on the beaches of the Netherlands. His animated works are a fusion of art and engineering and also appear in a BMW television commercial. Jansen says, “the walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds.”
