Interview With Randy From RAD

Introducing Randy De Jesus, the Founder and Creative Director of upstart brand RAD (Random Artistic Design). Straight outta inland Southern California, RAD brings fun and spontaneity through refreshing graphic design. Check out RAD products at Robust Flavor here.

RF: Where did you grow up?
Randy: I grew up on planet zeptar.  It’s near diamond bar.

RF: Has your upbringing had a big effect on your design style?
Randy: Hell yea! Cartoons for days.  Plus, I lived in a mini melting pot of different nationalities and cultures.  This majorly influence RAD’s random style.

RF: What were you into growing up?
Randy: I know it wasn’t homework.

RF: What do you worry about?
Randy: It’s not part of my vocab.

RF: When did you start RAD and what was the deciding factor to jump from an established brand to doing your own brand.
Randy: RAD started a year ago in 07.  I think the planets were aligned my way that year, cuz I just had the balls to quit the two jobs I was working at, and just start RAD full time.

RF: Which brands have you had a hand in starting?
Randy: Just my own.  It’s hard to chase more than one rabbit.  But I’ve always helped random people with their logos, flyers, and random business ventures.

RF: Which other brands have you done work for over the years?
Randy: I used to work at GRN appletree as a designer.

RF:How did you know you wanted to be a designer?
Randy: Cause it’s better than working at Olive Garden.  (I used to be a server there..haha)

RF: Are you easy to work with?
Randy: Yea.  But I can spaz sometimes.

RF: Do you like everything you do?
Randy: I DO.  Like getting interviewed? THATS AWESOME!

RF: What’s your favorite place or places to visit?
Randy: VEGAS

RF: Who or what inspires you?
Randy: bums.  Whenever I see one I get mad humble.  And I start to think of how fortunate I am.  Which inspires me to work really hard.

RF: What, if any, other designers (brands) do you like?
Randy: For graphic designs definitely Imaginary Foundation

RF: Outside of work, what do you do for fun?
Randy: Mariokart and Smash bros 64 FOR LIFE.  and if you’re good… and want to play for money.  call me: 9518979331.  I’ll back up my game. hahah. I think I take it too serious.

RF: What sucks right now?
Randy: I think the fact that there is only 24 hours in a day sucks.

RF: What is the 2009 style?
Randy: Call Japan. they know. or call RAD. ha ha

RF: What is one aspect of design you wish the general public appreciated?
Randy: I’m guilty of this.  but I wish the “meaning” of some designs were more appreciated.

RF: What’s your take on traditional print media vs. cyber world?
Randy: Both can be wack.  but both can be awesome.  I like both.
