Interview With Surfer Kassia Meador

Kassia Meador learned to ride longboards at Malibu’s famed Surfrider Beach when she was 14 years old. Quickly discovering her natural surfing talent and love for the ocean, Kassia dedicated most of her free time to the waves and beach culture of Malibu, refining herself into a smooth, stylish surfer with a graceful noseriding repertoire. She won the first contest she ever entered and, for the past several years she has been traveling the world as a pro surfer and popular Roxy swimsuit model. Known for her radiant smile, charm, and contagious laughter, Kassia’s visibility and reputation within the surf industry has allowed her the opportunity to become a mainstream media spokeswoman for female athletes. Kassia has been featured in magazines such as Seventeen, Jane, Allure, and Paper, and is fast becoming an established television personality thanks to network spots on MTV, ABC, Fox Sports Net and Fuel TV. When Kassia is not chasing waves she is hanging with her dog, working out, or thinking about her next project.

RF: Where did you grow up?
Kassia: Agoura Hills California…aka The Valley

RF: When did you first get into your sport?
Kassia: I first got into surfing when I was 15 through the junior lifeguards program.

RF: What was your first set-up?
Kassia: I was first riding my dad and other friend’s boards. But when I got my very own board for Christmas it was a 9′2 Perfect Balance two plus one with blue flowers on the nose.

RF: What was the scene like back then?
Kassia: There weren’t too many other girls my age that surfed. There was a small crew of girls at Malibu that all surfed really well. I started hanging down there. It was rad to have good girl surfers to look up to.

RF: What was the first video you were ever in?
Kassia: I think the first video I was ever in was The Seedling.

RF: Which sponsors have you had throughout your career?
Kassia: The two sponsors I have had throughout my entire surfing career were Roxy and Donald Takayama. It is really rad to be with two companies that have backed me from the start.

RF: Where in the world has your career taken you?
Kassia: My career has taken me many places like France, Spain, Tahiti, Fiji, The Cook Islands, Maldives, Mexico, Indo and Scotland

RF: Most memorable traveling memories?
Kassia: There are so many traveling experiences that were amazing. But I think my favorite one was traveling to Indo on a boat with the roxy crew. We scored the best surf ever and had the best group of people.

RF: What else do you do for fun?
Kassia: I love to take photos, hang with friends, see live music, snowboard and just live life.

RF: Describe a typical day:
Kassia: Wake up eat and check the surf, surf for a bit. eat some food. Go train then surf again if I can then have some friends over. Make food and chill out in the hot tub.

RF: What is next for 2008?
Kassia: I am just really looking forward to surfing in the World Championships in France. I have been training hard and can’t wait to go give it my all.
