Interview With Nash Lundquist The MC
July 30th, 2008 Posted in InterviewsNash Lundquist grew up in Northern California… snowboarding, skateboarding, riding BMX, learning, listening to all types of music and just being a kid. He had a passion for rapping and, after a stint working for Southern Calif. brand UNIV, he recorded his first EP. He is going to be performing all over the place this summer and into the fall… maybe even your town! Introducing Nash Lundquist, he’s about to blow up.
RF: Tell us about yourself, where did you grow up?
Nash: I was born in Truckee California to my mom Carol Francisco and my pops John Lundquist. We moved from Tahoe area to the little foothill town Sonora, California. When my mom and dad split up I stayed with my dad because I was already establishing my childhood in Sonora. Then in my sophomore year of high school I moved to the East Bay area with my mom in order to help her out and try something different. Change is a good thing because it keeps your mind right. Every time you change locations you get back to being who you truly are. It is positive, especially if you are able to go back to where you came from.
RF: How did you end up working for UNIV in Encinitas?
Nash: When I moved to Southern California to go to junior college I noticed some Nike SB, Stussy, and UNIV stickers on the window. I always drove past wondering what that place was because i was familiar with the stickers, but it was never open. So I came back from Northern California one day and I decided to check and see if they opened up. Sure enough they did and from that day on I never stopped bothering the guys, so to keep me from over-loitering Mirko and Tim offered me a job. Now I have this amazing extended family that I respect and look after as they do me. It is so amazing meeting people you would never expect to have such a huge impact on your life. It is dope to be a part of such an innovative, respectful and fun place. Much love to my fam.
RF: So what’s up with your album coming out?
Nash: Ah, the album… yes!!! I have one coming out later this summer. It is called To Influence. I have been rappin’ since the seventh grade and I never had the beats to record with or the money. I have performed spoken word poetry throughout Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego and now New York and I thought it was about time to get back to writing songs and trying to make a CD. A real dope MC/Producer by the name of Profile fronted me some beats to use after I told him I rapped. They were killer so I asked him if he wanted to start helping me make an album. He said yes and now we have been in the studio every week touching things up. The studio is Capricorn Studios in downtown San Diego. The engineers there are the most talented people I have ever met. They are great to work with. Jeff has been doing a lot of the recording and Joe has been doing the mastering. This project should be dope. I can’t wait to finish it and start doing some live shows. I hope people are looking forward to it as well. I think its about time we hear the thoughts of a mixed up twenty year old mic controller.
RF: When and where can we find it?
Nash: I’m shooting for this upcoming August. We are still figuring out where it will be sold.
RF: Why don’t you give a run-down on the feel of your music and the inspiration behind it?
Nash: The CD won’t be your typical club banger, rappin’ about drinkin’, drugs and women. Some songs are mellow and easy to listen to while others are a little faster and very intense. Judging by the times today a twenty year old should have a lot to say. So I say what I feel and I speak my mind. I am a very confused young man who spreads that confusion through poetry on the mic leading the listener to question the situations I am in so hopefully they can relate. I talk about love, friendships, school, dreams, ambitions, goals, tragedies and life. I don’t know one person who can’t relate. I’m inspired by every single person, place or thing around me. Sometimes I go wander the streets of Downtown SD to seek inspiration. Sometimes I walk the beach or work. What isn’t inspiring about the world we live in. There are so many different paths we can take and so little time to take them all. I try to explore every aspect of life. Its enjoyable as it should be.
RF: You’re always all excited and positive. Tell the grumpy people of the world your secret!
Nash: ha ha ,oh man I got my down days too. But I’ll tell you what, everyday that I wake up I take a deep breath and I know I am alive. While I am alive I live. If I live I choose to live happily no matter what happens. No matter how bad of a night it was, or how bad something could be. That bad pushes me to want good even more so when I wake up I say Nash today is another day to be happy and make other people happy. So get up and get going because you only got twenty four more hours until you have to do it again.
RF: You recently took a trip to New York, what can you tell us about your time there?
Nash: Yo man, New York is one of the most unique and inspiring places I have ever been, it is so fast paced and I love it. Everyone is on the go because there is no time to waste. Ha ha ha. I took my time though to enjoy the different people and places in that city. We are all so unique and New York shows different cultures at their finest. It’s an amazing place. Plus, the food is unbelievable!
RF: What’s next for you my man?
Nash: Tomorrow
