Professional Surfer Ben McBrien Interviews Himself
July 1st, 2008 Posted in InterviewsPhiladelphia’s finest professional surfer Ben McBrien interviewed himself and talks about his recent travels. Ben is sponsored by UNIV, Zoo York, Ipath and Wave Riding Vehicles. Now, check out the interview of Ben and by Ben…
BM: SO YOU THINK YOU’RE HOT SHIT HUH?
bm: no not really I just thought this would be fun. Besides, people thought it was cool when Vincent Gallo interviewed himself for Grand Royal way back when.
BM: YOU RECENTLY WENT TO ALASKA TO GO SURFING…WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?
bm: it was the most beautiful/wild/huge place I’ve ever seen. When the clouds lifted we were surrounded by the tallest coastal mountain range on earth. It made me feel insignifigant. The beaches were piled in giant trees that had been thrown like matchsticks by the ocean and the lineup was patrolled by vicious sea lions.
BM: SEA LIONS?
bm: yeah…the cute little tricksters from the aquarium. Except these things were not cute. They would gang up into groups of 5 or six and form a wall of terror. Teeth bared and growling. They ruined they best day of waves for the whole trip.
BM: WOW I HOPE YOU HAVE A GOOD METHOD FOR CLEANING CRAP OUT OF YOUR WETSUIT.
bm: yes… I nearly shat in my wetsuit. We figured we were going to have to take a stand so we hung close to one another and just stood our ground as these hulking masses of blubber and teeth came at our faces. I came within inches of them. It was super heavy but it was that or not surf. And I didn’t travel all that way to watch the sea life.
BM: WHO IS THE “WE” YOU KEEP MENTIONING?
bm: I went with moviemaker; Joe Carter as we as Photographer; Nick Lavecchia and my good friends Jeff Myers and Billy Hume were surfing with me.
BM: “those guys are FAGS” –Jeff Spicoli
bm: hahahhahahahha
BM: TELL ME MORE
bm: well the water was about 39 degrees but the weather was stellar especially for that time of year. Most of the time the beach break was too big and breaking on the third or fourth reef so to speak. We found this left poinbreak that was something out of a dream. Though it wasn’t the most extreme wave on the planet it was better than any I’ve seen in a long time. But then again I don’t get out much these days with the little one and all.
BM: HOW DID YOU GET AROUND UP THERE?
bm: the town where we were staying has no road leading to it. So after flying in we rented a van get around. We could only get to one surf spot by car but we met a boat captain, Mark, as well as a few other local fisherpeople who took us out to the point breaks. Later in the week after some of the snow melted we were able to get out to the point on ATVs.
BM: ALRIGHT DUDE WRAP IT UP I’M OVER THIS INTERVIEW
bm: well I’d tell you about the bears if we had more time but you can just see them in the pictures.. Alaska is SO GNAR.
